Overhauled Alternator Drive Coupling

Made for Continental gear-driven alternators
Helps absorb engine vibrations and includes a built-in shear section to protect both the alternator and engine. This elastomer-style coupling replaces older spring-type versions (PN 640933 and 640934) and meets the requirements of Continental Service Bulletin SB11-3.

  • Suitable for Continental engine models IO/TSIO-520, IFO/TSIOF-550, TSIOL-550, and GTSIO-520
  • Incorporates an elastomer section to dampen vibrations and provide a fail-safe shear mechanism
  • Request proper torque application (300-450 in-lbs) and correction orientation of thrust washer (copper-colored side facing the alternator)
  • Should be inspected for slippage torque; must resist slippage at a minimum of 180 in-lbs, while in service couplings should not drop below 140 in-lbs
  • Alternators and coupling drive tools also available!

Additional Technical Notes:

  • Cotter Pin Installation: After torquing the coupling nut, ensure the cotter pin is properly installed. If the slots in the nut do not align with the hole in the shaft, tighten the nut further (without exceeding 450 in-lbs) to achieve alignment. Do not loosen the nut to align the slots, as this can compromise torque integrity.
  • Alternator Mounting Torque: When installing the alternator onto the engine, torque the mounting nuts to 150–180 in-lbs in a crisscross pattern to ensure even seating.
  • Woodruff Key Verification: Before installation, verify that the woodruff key is properly installed in the alternator shaft. An improperly seated or missing key can lead to coupling misalignment and potential failure.
  • Thread Preparation: Clean and, if necessary, lightly lubricate the threads of the coupling nut and shaft to ensure accurate torque readings and prevent galling.
  • Thrust Washer Reuse: Always use a new thrust washer during installation. Reusing an old washer can lead to improper seating and potential coupling failure.
  • Shipping Hardware Identification: Be aware that some alternators may be shipped with a metal shipping washer and/or spacer. These components must be removed and discarded before installation, as their presence can cause interference with the engine’s gear train, leading to significant damage. hartzell.aero
  • Coupling Slippage Testing: When performing the slippage torque test, rotate the coupling at a rate of 1 to 2 degrees per second. This controlled rate ensures accurate measurement of the coupling’s resistance.
  • Regular Inspection Interval: While Continental recommends inspecting the alternator and coupling every 500 hours, consider performing this inspection during each annual maintenance cycle or whenever the alternator is removed, to ensure ongoing reliability.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the lead time for ordering this alternator drive coupling?

The lead time for ordering the 635796 Alternator Drive Coupling typically ranges from 5 to 10 business days, depending on availability and shipping options. For more precise timing, please check with our team.

What are the signs that my alternator drive coupling needs servicing or replacement?

Signs that your alternator drive coupling may need servicing or replacement include unusual vibrations or noises during operation, difficulty in generating consistent electrical power, visible wear or damage on the coupling, and reduced alternator performance. If you notice any of these issues, it’s important to inspect and address them promptly.

What maintenance schedule do you recommend for alternator drive couplings?

It is recommended to inspect the alternator drive coupling during routine maintenance checks or every 100-150 flight hours. Regular inspections help identify signs of wear or damage early, ensuring timely servicing or replacement and maintaining optimal performance. For more information on when to overhaul your drive coupling, read this blog by the AOPA.

Can I service the alternator drive coupling myself, or should it be done by a certified technician?

While minor inspections and cleaning can be performed by knowledgeable individuals, it is advisable to have servicing or replacement of the alternator drive coupling done by a certified technician. They have the expertise and tools to ensure the coupling is properly serviced or replaced according to industry standards and manufacturer specifications. However, QAA does provide Alternator Coupling Tool Kits to support inspection and installation of select models.

What is included in your overhaul service for the alternator drive coupling?

Our overhaul service for the alternator drive coupling includes a thorough inspection for wear or damage, cleaning to remove contaminants, replacement of any worn or defective parts, and rigorous testing to ensure the coupling meets performance and safety standards. The service is designed to restore the coupling to optimal condition, extending its lifespan and reliability.

How can I troubleshoot issues with my alternator drive coupling?

To troubleshoot issues with your alternator drive coupling, start by checking for any unusual vibrations or noises and inspecting the coupling for visible signs of wear or damage. Ensure that all connections are secure and properly aligned. If problems persist, consult the aircraft’s maintenance manual for specific diagnostic procedures or seek assistance from a certified technician to conduct a detailed inspection and identify the root cause.

What are the torque specifications for 646655 couplings?

Tighten the coupling nut to 300–450 in-lbs. If cotter pin slots don’t align, you may tighten further – but never exceed 450 in-lbs. Do not loosen the nut to align the slots, as this can compromise torque integrity. New or overhauled couplings must resist at least 180 in-lbs of slippage torque. Couplings in service should not drop below 140 in-lbs. Always test before installation.

How should I orientate the thrust washer when installing the coupling?

Install the thrust washer with the copper-colored side facing the alternator. Incorrect installation can lead to premature failure or improper seating. Ensure you have discarded any temporary shipping spacers or washers before installation. Leaving them in place can result in gear misalignment and internal engine damage.

What are some signs that I can look for if I need to replace my coupling?

Whenever the alternator is removed, inspect the coupling for signs of cracking, delamination, or wear in the elastomer section. If you spot any of these signs, it may be time for a replacement.

What are some installation and fitment suggestions when installing a new coupling?

Ensure the alternator slips into place without binding. The mounting flange should seat flush- never force the alternator into position, as this can damage internal gear components.

Are there any official guidance references available?

Always refer to Continental Service Bulletin SB11-3 and Hartzell’s Service Info Letter A-140 Rev. 1 for up-to-date procedures and compliance requirements.
